The 4th Century Latin Father St. Ambrose of Milan wrote his treatise ‘On the Duties of the Clergy’ during a period where there was much political turmoil within the Roman Empire. The church was not exempt from being impacted due to heresy and schism; which was the peril of conflict over worthy candidates to ecclesial offices such as the Episcopate. St. Ambrose, a former governor, was chosen to succeed the bishopric of Milan much to his opposition; but by God’s grace accepted his calling and fulfilled his vocational duties. His experiences as Bishop produced a classic filled with timeless wisdom, instruction, and inspiration; spiritually beneficial for both clerics and lay servants alike.
